Buchanan Building

This modernist tower is a clear example of our commitment to designing buildings that, both aesthetically and functionally, stand the test of time.

When the University of British Columbia (UBC) engaged us to design this new home for their faculty offices, they presented an unusual challenge. Interior space needed to be flexible and adaptable to respond to the changing needs of faculty and staff over time.

Conceived as a bold and simple statement, the building is articulated into 3 main planes with a purposely expressed, gridded concrete structure. This outboard structural system allows for virtually column-free floors, creating the adaptable space our clients needed. In addition, deep set windows provide passive solar control, maintaining a spectacular view of the campus under changing light conditions. More than four decades later, the tower is a campus landmark and historically significant building for Vancouver.
